Togo imported, 95 million kg of plastics on the year 2019, with PE and PP accounting for about 95 percent of the imports. Despite their poor waste management program in place, the government has taken measures on their plastic relationship instituting a ban back on 2011 on the production, import, and marketing of non-biodegradable plastic bags, while simultaneously authorizing the sale and use of biodegradable alternatives. https://www.waste.ccacoalition.org/sites/default/files/files/lome_city_profile_0.pdf
Green Industry Plast
GIP-Togo, in collaboration with the local authorities began back in the nobel mission of collecting and recovering plastic waste for recycling purposes, to reduce their pollution of the natural environment. Bricks, paving slabs, whiteboards for schools, and other plastic items have been made using the machinery at their disposal. Not only this but the projects gets the community involved, recruited and trained. Women who are destitute and abandoned in their homes, and young people who have dropped out of school get the opportunity to help in the sorting and learn about the re-use of waste materials.
