Coffee waste in Denmark primarily comes from the coffee production process, particularly from spent coffee grounds after brewing. Additionally, coffee pulp is generated during the processing of coffee beans, where a significant portion of the biomass is discarded as waste. https://www.thezerowastecoffeeproject.com
Connecting Grounds
Driven by the awareness of substantial waste within the food sector, Giulia Francesca Marchetti co-founded Connecting Grounds with the aim of creating a novel baking ingredient. Recognizing the untapped potential of discarded resources, one of the founders identified used coffee grounds as a nutritious raw material that could be upcycled. This realization marked the beginning of their venture.
Kaffe Bueno
Kaffe Bueno, co-founded by Alejandro Franco in Denmark, operates a biorefinery that transforms spent coffee grounds into valuable ingredients for the personal care, nutraceutical, and functional food and beverage industries. They utilize various downstream processes to break down the coffee grounds into their constituent molecules, from which they extract and refine products like KAFFOIL™ (coffee oil) and KAFFIBRE™ (coffee flour).
